6 motorcycles, 3 vehicles seized in RTD operation against errant motorists at Jalan UMS

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 665 vehicles were inspected in the Sabah RTD Special Integrated Operation conducted at Jalan UMS on Sunday.

Sabah RTD Director, Mohd Harris Ali, said 155 vehicles were subject to action through notice summons and 145 were issued summonses for violating P22 offence.

“Motorists without competency driving licence (CDL) was the highest offence recorded with six motorcycles and three vehicles seized,” he said at a press conference during the Sabah RTD Special Integrated Operation.

Harris said the operation involved 111 officers and personnel from various agencies including RTD, Sabah PDRM Investigation and Enforcement Department, Department of Environment (DOE) and Sabah National Registration Department (JPN).

Harris said 28,183 vehicles were inspected in the Special Technical Strike Operation in Sabah which took place from Dec 25 2024 to Feb 20. 

“A total of 5,225 summons notices were issued involving 1,931 vehicles while 16 vehicles were seized for violations of traffic laws. “Among the main offences detected were 620 cases for driving without a vocational licence, no competency driving licence (CDL) with 442 cases, expired vehicle licence (459 cases), no valid insurance cover (212 cases), carrying excessive loads (210 cases) and carrying dangerous loads (200 cases)” he said.

In addition, Sabah RTD also took court action against motorists under the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) Act 1987 (Act 334), particularly involving the offence of carrying excessive loads.

“In 2024, a total of 701 LPKP cases were recorded, with 139 cases having been resolved while another 562 cases were still in the court process. “RM487,700 court fines were collected for cases that have been resolved,” Harris said.

For 2025, 12 cases have been resolved with a total fine of RM22,500 as of Feb 17 this year.

He also said under Section 19(3) of the LPKP Act 1987, a fine of not less than RM1,000 and not more than RM10,000 or a maximum imprisonment of one year or both could be imposed for overloading offence.

Harris said Sabah RTD would continue to tighten enforcement, especially ahead of the month of Ramadan and the coming Aidilfitri celebrations.

“The Road Safety Unit will implement safety advocacy programmes with various parties to increase the awareness of road users,” he said.

He hoped all drivers would comply with the traffic rules and regulations. “Practise safe driving to reduce the rate of accidents and deaths on the road,” he said.
