BEAUFORT: A crocodile was spotted in floodwaters in front of St Paul’s Secondary School here on Monday. The school is located not far from Beaufort town.

Public and local residents here are advised not to walk through floodwaters, as no one can be certain what might be lurking beneath the surface — besides snakes and poisonous animals.

Beaufort District Police Chief Supt Wong Leong Meng said this was the first time police received a report of a crocodile sighting in the town area.

He immediately contacted the Sabah Wildlife Department, which came on Tuesday (March 11) to monitor the situation.

“It’s possible the crocodile surfaced through one of the large drains, so we are advising the public to stay alert and be careful,” Wong said.

Last week, a crocodile was seen walking along the road in Kg Lumat at night. Similar incidents have also occurred twice in Kg Mentulud.

Residents are worried about the presence of the crocodiles and parents have been urged not to allow their children out at night without a flashlight.
