Coastal reservoirs ideal solution
Amarjit noted that despite their promising potential, implementing coastal reservoirs in Sabah faces several challenges, including initial capital investment, potential environmental disruption if not carefully planned, and the need for advanced engineering solutions to manage salinity levels.
Kota Kinabalu: International Water Association (Sustainable Coastal Reservoir and Estuarine Development) member Datuk Dr Amarjit Singh said coastal reservoirs could possibly be the most suitable solution to address water supply challenges in Sabah.

“Coastal reservoirs offer a promising approach that can tackle the dual challenges of water scarcity and environmental conservation in Sabah’s unique geographical context,” he said in a statement, here, recently.

“Despite Sabah’s abundant natural resources and vast coastline along the South China Sea, many regions continue to experience water shortages due to irregular rainfall patterns and increasing demand from urbanization and tourism,” said Amarjit who specialises in Sustainable Coastal Reservoir and Estuarine Development.

He said unlike traditional inland reservoirs that often result in significant land inundation and habitat disruption, coastal reservoirs present several strategic advantages specifically suited to Sabah’s conditions.
