20,000 forces personnel in Sabah: Khaled

Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Government continues to ensure Sabah’s security by strengthening its security forces and implementing various strategic projects.  

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said these measures aim to enhance preparedness in facing any threats, whether domestic or external.

“The strength of the armed forces in Sabah currently stands at approximately 20,000 personnel, with an additional 3,000 deployed for specific operations.  

“Apart from the presence of security forces, the Federal Government, through the Defence Ministry (Mindef), has allocated RM2 billion to implement several key projects in Sabah.

“Ongoing projects include the construction of military camps such as Kem Paradise and Kem Sahabat in Lahad Datu, the development of family housing for military personnel, as well as upgrades to infrastructure and maintenance of border control posts,” he said.  

According to Khaled, in efforts to further strengthen security at border areas, the Government also planned the construct three new security posts in Sabah.

“The status of these projects is currently at the procurement stage before the tender process begins in the near future,” he explained after a courtesy call on Head of State Tun Musa Aman at Istana Seri Kinabalu, here, Monday.  

The visit aimed to foster closer ties between the State Government and Mindef while also updating Musa on the security situation in Sabah.

Also present were Army Chief General Tan Sri Wira Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, Eastern Field Command Commander Lieutenant General Datuk Mohd Sofi Md Lepi and Eastern Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Datuk Khir Junaidi Idris.
