LAHAD DATU: The Sabah General Operations Force (GOF) has thwarted an attempt to smuggle RM401,280 worth of cigarettes at Jalan Segama on Wednesday.

The seizure was made when a lorry was intercepted during Op Taring Alpha at around 8.30pm.

Acting on intelligence, the team detained the vehicle, which was in a suspicious condition, leading to the arrest of a local man.

Further inspection uncovered 192,000 sticks of cigarettes, along with an eight-tonne lorry and a mobile phone, bringing the total seizure value to RM691,730.

The suspect and confiscated items have been handed over to the Crime Investigation Division of Lahad Datu Police Headquarters for further action under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967.
