LAHAD DATU: The Sabah General Operations Force (GOF) foiled an attempt to smuggle RM401,280 worth of cigarettes at Jalan Segama, here, on Wednesday.

GOF Sabah Brigade Commander Datuk Abdul Rani Alias said the seizure was made by Battalion 17 GOF Lahad Datu during an Op Taring Alpha operation at 8.30pm. 

He said acting on intelligence, the team detained a lorry carrying 192,000 sticks of cigarettes and arrested a local man.

“The eight-tonne lorry and a mobile phone were also seized. All the seizures, including the cigarettes, were worth an estimated RM691,730,” he said.

The suspect and the seizures were handed over to the Crime Investigation Division of Lahad Datu Police Headquarters for further action.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967.
