KUCHING: New South Wales (NSW), one of Australia’s leading states in the energy sector, has expressed interest in strengthening its relationship with Sarawak in the areas of renewable energy and environmental sustainability.

This was disclosed by NSW Senior Trade Commissioner Andrew James Parker during a courtesy call on Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.

According to a statement by Dr Hazland’s office, the meeting underscored the potential for collaboration in the field of green energy and sustainability, highlighting the strengths of both regions in driving forward a greener, more sustainable future.

Parker said NSW could bring cutting-edge technological expertise and significant experience in harnessing renewable resources, such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power for which Sarawak is known for, having the vast natural resources required.

Echoing Parker’s sentiment, Dr Hazland said Sarawak’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to a low-carbon economy aligns seamlessly with NSW’s vision of fostering innovation in clean energy solutions.

He said the State boasts substantial untapped potential in hydropower, solar energy and biomass, positioning itself as a key player in Asean’s energy transition, as well as developing its energy resources in line with global sustainability goals.
