PUTATAN: The Sabah Public Works Department is stepping up efforts to monitor landslide-prone areas across the State after several recent incidents disrupted infrastructure, including a water supply disruption in Sandakan.
Sabah Works Minister, Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said the Department is prepared to handle landslides by activating early warning systems and traffic management plans to minimise disruptions.
“The Department has monitoring teams in every district to assess landslide risks and flood-affected roads.
“In case of an incident, emergency responses and traffic management plans will be implemented to ensure roads remain accessible,” he said.
He also spoke about the March 20 landslide in Sandakan, which damaged a main water pipe and disrupted supply.
“The Sabah Water Department has completed repairs and water pressure is gradually recovering.
“We hope supply will normalise before March 25, especially with residents preparing for Aidilfitri,” he said.
Landslides have also been reported in areas like Pensiangan-Keningau. Shahelmey said the Works Department is closely monitoring high-risk locations and taking preventive measures to ensure safety and infrastructure stability.
The Putatan MP and Tanjung Keramat Assemblyman distributed vouchers to 200 low-income families in his constituency to help them prepare for Syawal.
“Recipients can use the vouchers to buy children’s clothing or other essentials like cooking ingredients for festive preparations,” he said.
