PUTATAN: Motorists travelling long distances for the holiday season and Hari Raya Aidilfitri have been urged to exercise caution due to ongoing road construction works in Sabah.

Deputy Chief Minister III cum State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya highlighted construction works along the Pan Borneo Sabah Highway, particularly between Ranau and Semporna, and near the Tawau Checkpoint.

He also warned of traffic congestion and construction activities from Kota Kinabalu to the Berungis roundabout in Tuaran, affecting routes WP6, WP7 and WP8.

“Motorists are advised to remain vigilant, follow road signs and prepare for potential challenges on the road,” he said when launching a State-level Road Safety Campaign at Dumpil Bay, Monday, where he also distributed road safety brochures and helmets to motorists.

On frequent complaints regarding lengthy detours due to severe traffic jams, causing road users to spend longer time on the road, Shahelmey directed the Public Works Department (JKR) and contractors to ensure there are more convenient routes during the holiday season, particularly in the Benoni area where Package 4 remains under construction.

“I hope this measure will ensure a smoother journey for drivers,” he said.

Shahelmey said according to statistics, the Kota Kinabalu area recorded 1,500 accidents in the first three months this year, involving 15 fatal cases, caused by various factors including speeding.

“This needs to be given serious attention as the traffic flow will be higher during the festive and holiday season,” he said.
