SANDAKAN: Former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal questioned the disparity in flood assistance given to victims in Johor and Sabah.
The Parti Warisan President urged the State Government to clarify why Sabahans appeared to receive less.
He claimed that flood victims in Johor received RM3,000, while those in Sabah only received RM1,300 – and possibly not even from the State Government.
“In Johor, I saw people getting RM3,000. In Sabah, it’s RM1,300.
“And I was told even that may have come from Yayasan Sabah, not the State Government. I want to know if this is true,” he said, after attending a breaking of fast event in Libary, on Sunday, where he also distributed aid to asnaf families.
Shafie said with Sabah having been hit by floods three times this year, the Government must step up both its preparedness and response.
She urged making wider monsoon drains, and criticised unchecked logging which he said contributed to worsening floods.
Meanwhile, at a separate event in Karamunting, Shafie reminded Warisan members not to be lulled into a false sense of security by public applause, saying strong crowd turnouts should not be mistaken for actual voter support.
“We cannot afford to be complacent. Support at events is encouraging, but it’s not a guarantee of votes,” he said.
He urged party members to focus on building trust and strengthening engagement with the rakyat, especially among young voters, who form a significant voting bloc.
He said Warisan’s long-standing commitment to defending the rights of Sabahans and improving their livelihoods remained unchanged.
The Semporna MP said multi-cornered fights were common in the local political landscape and should not be a distraction.
“Even in the last state election, we faced many challengers. Five-cornered, ten-cornered fights are normal in politics — what matters is showing the people we are still the best option to protect Sabah and its people,” he said.
During the Karamunting event, Shafie also handed out duit raya and rice aid to around 200 asnaf families. Children present also received duit raya.
