PENAMPANG: A 22-year-old local, believed to be a drug transporter, was arrested for carrying more than 1kg of syabu in an operation at a residential area in Beverly Hills, Jalan Bundusan, on Sunday.
Penampang District Police Chief Supt Sammy Newton said the suspect was apprehended around 8pm by a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Penampang District Police Headquarters.
He said the suspect was carrying a black plastic bag in his right hand which contained a transparent plastic packet containing a green packet labelled “Guanyinwang.”
“Further checks revealed another plastic packet filled with crystalline substances believed to be methamphetamine, or syabu,” he told reporters after the 218th Police Day Commemoration at the Penampang Police Headquarters, Tuesday.
“The drugs, weighing 1,014.99gm, had an estimated market value of RM30,000 and were believed intended for distribution in Papar, Penampang and Kota Kinabalu.
“Preliminary investigations showed the suspect was acting as a transporter, moving drugs within these areas, and the seized drugs could be supplied to 5,000 users,” he added.
Sammy said the suspect, who also tested positive for methamphetamine, has been remanded for further investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping, or both, on conviction.
He said police will continue cracking down on drug-related crimes and urged the public to provide any information that could help in combating the drug trade.
