SANDAKAN: A mercury spill occurred at the Science Laboratory I, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Libaran, Sandakan, Wednesday, due to a broken thermometer.

According to the Head of Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station, PKPgB Severinus@Mohd Nizam Sainkui, the fire department received an emergency call via MERS999 at 12:31pm before rushing to the scene.

The fire department immediately took decontamination measures by cleaning the spill with sulfur powder to avoid any potential risk to the school staff and students.

After ensuring the area was safe, the operation was fully concluded at 1:23pm.
