PETALING JAYA: Julau MP Larry Sng has rubbished claims that his proposal to grant Bumiputera status to Sarawakian Chinese was politically motivated, citing the racial makeup of his constituency.

Sng said the Chinese population in his constituency made up less than 5%.

“Furthermore, Parti Bangsa Malaysia’s presence and aspirations are mainly localised in Bumiputera-led rural constituencies,” the PBM president said in a Facebook post today.

He was responding to Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations president Richard Wee who had labelled his proposal as being politically motivated.

Wee said the existing policy was acceptable to all Sarawakians, and that Malaysians have got used to the Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera status.

He also said such a proposal would be sensitive at the federal level.

Sng said Wee may not be able to see “the Sarawak to come” while he, on the other hand, envisages a “Sarawak for all Sarawakians where we chart our own future”.

“We as a nation shouldn’t be limited by what we have now, but instead aspire to what we can become,”he said.

On Wednesday, Sng had said Sarawak’s leaders should consider granting Bumiputera status to Sarawakians of Chinese descent, citing the state’s uniqueness in racial composition as a region in Malaysia and not just a state.
