LAHAD DATU: East Coast consumers will soon enjoy a more stable power supply once the 275kV transmission system upgrade at the Dam Road Main Intake Substation (PMU) is fully completed by mid-next month.

The PMU is the fifth in Sabah’s transmission grid system to operate at a 275kV voltage level and has a capacity of up to 400MW.

The completion of the PMU will also ensure that another critical energy supply project in Sabah, the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), stays on schedule. The BESS will use the Dam Road PMU as an injection point into the transmission grid.

Sabah Electricity’s Chief Transmission Officer Ir. Ts. Racheal Lim said the first phase of this project involves upgrading the 132kV transmission line to 275kV over 116 kilometres.

Cosmobeauté Malaysia and beautyexpo will expand into East Malaysia with the launch of the Cosmobeauté Malaysia Borneo Festival 2026 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) from May 25 to 26.
Once upgraded, the transmission line can deliver up to 400MW of electricity at any given time, improving the management of power generation capacity shortages in Sabah’s East Coast.

This project will also enhance the reliability of the transmission grid, maintaining its performance at an optimal level. Currently, the transmission grid’s system minutes performance is less than one — similar to that of Peninsular Malaysia.

The project is being carried out by the Sabah Special Electricity Supply Project Team (PPKBES) under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), with a total expenditure of RM132 million.
