There will be a solution to TikTok in US by Saturday deadline: Vance

WASHINGTON: The US government is expected to present a solution for the Chinese short video app TikTok before a deadline this Saturday, Vice President JD Vance said on Thursday, reported German news agency dpa.

Vance stated on Fox News that the government is "in a good place" but still needs a couple of days to finalise some aspects. President Donald Trump will announce the solution before the deadline expires, Vance stressed.

According to a US law, TikTok should have been sold by its China-based owner ByteDance by January 19 or go offline in the United States. However, Trump granted a 75-day grace period, which expires on Saturday.

Vance mentioned that the aim was to achieve two objectives: "First of all, you want to make sure that the TikTok app in the United States is not spying on people ...

Recently, Amazon expressed interest in buying TikTok, according to a media report. The world's largest online retailer made the offer in a letter to Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the New York Times reported. However, various parties involved in the negotiations reportedly do not take the Amazon offer seriously.

ByteDance and TikTok have so far stated that it is impossible to sell only the US part of the short video app, as this would break up the platform.

Trump said there are "various ways to buy TikTok" and they will find the one that is best for the US. 

Another potential buyer for TikTok is the software company Oracle, which ByteDance has already tasked with securing the data of US users.
