Kota Kinabalu: The trials for the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) new scoring system of 3x15 is set to take place in Perak this month.
It starts with the National Juniors Under-18 Championships from April 23-27 followed by the Petronas International Challenge from August 12-17.
Sabah Badminton Association’s (SBA) technical committee chairman Datuk Anthony C. Linggian said the new system will be adopted for trials among all the five Continental Confederations i.e. Badminton Asia, Badminton Pan Am, Badminton Oceania and Badminton Africa in selected Grade 3 and National tournaments from April to October, 2025.
“Only then, feedback will be forwarded to BWF for final decision during the BWF Annual General Meeting in 2026.
“This new system can be found in BWF web site under BWF Statute, Section 4.1.4 which explains the new scoring system of 3x15 system that follows the Alternative Laws Of Badminton.
“It consists of the best of three games and the game is won by the side that scores 15 points first except when the score reaches 14-all.
“If so, the side that gains a two points lead will win the game but if the score becomes 20-all, then the first to reach 21 points will be the victor.
“This new scoring system presumably will make the match more exciting with fewer points per game,” he said.
Meanwhile, Anthony said Dr. Sainah Limbasan from Tuaran, who is one of the candidates under his guidance, has been selected by SBA for the Badminton Association Malaysia’s (BAM) certificated umpires assessment exercise during the National Juniors Under-18 Championships in Perak.
Anthony will also be in Selangor next week as BAM’s accredited referee assessor during the 2nd Junior Elite tournament involving Penang, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor from April 8-13.
He also said he is hoping to train more local umpires and referees in Sabah this year and urged those interested to contact him (012-8330666) or SBA honorary secretary Rechine Jikah (010-8853911) for more information.
