KUNAK: The 2.5-kilometer gravel road leading to Kadazan Mostyn requires urgent upgrading to ensure smoother and safer access for both locals and visitors, including those heading to the upcoming Impian Lake tourism centre.

The road connects important areas such as SK Mostyn, Kg Sri Bahagia, Kg Mostyn Lama, and the SD Guthrie Plantation.

According to the Kunak Public Works Department (JKR), only 624 meters of the road are paved, while the majority of it remains gravel.

Ibrahim Tabir, Chairman of the Kunak Journalists' Club, emphasized the need for the road's upgrade, especially with the opening of Impian Lake this year.

"This road is under the management of JKR. Upgrading it will not only ease access for tourists but also improve connectivity for nearby rural villages," he said.

The upgrade is seen as essential for the Year of Visit Malaysia 2026 and will benefit the region’s infrastructure.

The gravel road is challenging to navigate, especially after heavy rain, as it becomes damaged and littered with rocks, making it difficult for vehicles to pass.

Community leaders from the surrounding villages have urged the government to expedite the road's upgrade.

Last year, JKR Kunak confirmed that the proposal for the road upgrade had been submitted to the headquarters in Kota Kinabalu, awaiting approval. State Works Minister Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya stated that the project's timeline depends on priority and budget availability.

In related news, Lahad Datu UMNO Youth Chief, Dato' Sri Anil Sandhu, confirmed that federal funding for the upgrade has been secured, and the state government is expected to begin work soon.
