KOTA KINABALU: Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has urged more investment in rural tourism, highlighting its growing appeal through cultural and nature-based experiences.
He emphasised that such investments would drive inclusive development for local communities while improving accommodation standards ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Speaking after the franchise agreement signing ceremony between Wyndham Hotels and Resorts and Capitol Hospitality Group (CHG), Joniston welcomed the launch of the first-ever Ramada by Wyndham Hotel here.
Set to open in 2029 as part of the 88 Avenue development in Kepayan, the project is expected to boost the local economy and enhance the city’s appeal to tourists and business travellers.
Wyndham’s Senior Development Director Eudo Chan said the new hotel—designed by Obsessive Compulsive Design Sdn Bhd—will help position Kota Kinabalu as a premier regional tourism and business destination.
