KENINGAU: A Selangor-based non-governmental organisation lodged a police report over the alleged abuse and exploitation of an Indian national working in Keningau.

The non-governmental organisation (NGO) was represented by Kamalanathan Thanimalay, who lodged the police report in Keningau on April 15.

Based on the police report, the victim works at a restaurant in Keningau and has not been paid for two months.

His employer also allegedly took away his passport and phone so he could not call his wife back home in India.

The victim’s wife reached out to the NGO for help on April 8, claiming her husband is being verbally abused and physically hurt and is so stressed that he has thought about suicide.

“The employer has not only failed to pay his (victim’s) wages but has also seized his passport and phone, leaving him trapped and unable to seek help,” Kamalanathan said in the report.

The NGO urged police intervention and assistance from the Labour Department to ensure the victim receives his unpaid wages and is safely repatriated to India.

“We want the victim to get his unpaid salary, passport and phone so he can return to India safely,” said Kamalanathan.
