SANDAKAN: Efforts to light up dark areas in Karamunting have been intensified with the installation of 20 solar-powered street lights along Jalan Pintas Indah Sibuga by the Karamunting State Assemblyman’s Office.

Karamunting Assemblyman, Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, said the installation aims to ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians in the area, which has long been without any street lighting.

“This road gets very dark at night and poses safety risks. So, we took the initiative to install solar lights to help illuminate the area,” he said.

Hiew said solar lights were chosen because they are cost-effective, require no electrical connection, and can still operate even during power outages.

Jalan Pintas Indah Sibuga is one of the main routes frequently used by residents travelling to and from the city centre, he said, the lack of street lighting had previously raised concerns, especially during rainy weather or late at night.

Hiew also said several other locations in Karamunting have been identified as needing solar lighting, and future installations will be considered based on needs and community feedback.

“This may be a small effort, but it’s an important step in lighting up Karamunting. My hope is that this initiative helps residents and road users feel safer,” he said, expressing his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the project’s success.

The installation of the solar lights was completed last Friday.
