Tuaran: Some 29,000 primary and secondary school students across six zones throughout the district will take part in the tree seed planting activity, which will take place simultaneously in conjunction with the Tuaran Earth Day Celebration on April 22.
The programme, organised by Tuaran Parliament’s People Service Centre, is held in collaboration with the Tuaran District Education Office (PPD), the Department of Environment (JAS), as well as various government and private agencies.
It will feature activities such as planting various saplings, a poster drawing competition, and environmental exhibitions.
The planting locations include riverbanks and areas at risk of erosion and landslides, including school surroundings.
This Earth Day celebration also aims to achieve two record creations to be entered into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR), namely the planting of the highest number of Baccaurea Lanceolata (Liposu) trees, which is more than 8,800 trees.
Another record targeted is the simultaneous planting of Liposu trees by 87 primary and secondary schools in Tuaran district at their respective locations.
Besides being an effort to enliven Earth Day celebrations, this programme also aims to raise awareness on the importance of tree planting in preserving the natural ecosystem, which can also serve as a sustainable and effective flood mitigation method.
The launch ceremony will be officiated by the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, at the Sabah Co-Curriculum Centre, Kem Malangang Kiulu.
Also scheduled to attend are Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, department heads, and community leaders.
