Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s Wee Jian Fang and Jayden Jay Ng have been selected by Malaysia Soft Tennis Association (MSTA) to represent the country in the 103rd DongA Soft Tennis International Tournament in Korea from May 2-10.
Sabah Soft Tennis Association (SSTA) in a statement released on Tuesday said the duo will be accompanied by Samuel Ho and their trip is fully sponsored by Korea Soft Tennis Association (KSTA).
Meanwhile, MSTA head coach KK Chin said Sabah will be hosting the Malaysian (Closed) Soft Tennis Championship 2025 in Kota Kinabalu this weekend (April 26-27).
“This is the ranking tournament for all Malaysian soft netters who wish to take part in future international soft tennis championships.
“The upcoming tournaments this year include the 19th China Cup International Soft Tennis Championship at the Taizhou Sports Centre, Zhejiang, China from May-27, 2025 Nonghyup Bank Incheon Korea Cup International Soft Tennis Tournament from June 16-23 in Incheon, South Korea and the 2025 Sunchang Open Soft Tennis Tournament in Sunchang City, South Korea from June 23-July 1,” he said.
Chin, who is also the secretary general of South East Asia Soft Tennis Federation (SEASTF), added that SSTA are hoping to get the green light from MSTA to hold the SEASTF Junior Camp and Junior Tournament for the Under-12 and Under-15 boys and girls here in Kota Kinabalu from August 26-31.
“Taipei Soft Tennis Association president Prof. Chu Wen Ching has promised MSTA to send over several tutors and coaches to conduct the one-week event.
“We are expecting more than 120 players to take part including four teams from Chinese Taipei elementary schools,” he said.
He also hoped the tennis courts in Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex will be upgraded soon to be able to host international tournaments.
“The last international soft tennis tournament held here was in 2017 with eight countries taking part.
“Officials from Japan and Chinese Taipei had requested us to upgrade the courts in 2019 so that future tournaments will be held here and I hope work will begin in the foreseeable future.”
