TAWAU: Police have yet to receive any reports of missing fishermen here in relation to a recent detention of four fishermen from Sabah by Indonesian authorities.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said this to reporters when asked about the case on Saturday.
Indonesian media reported that four Malaysians were detained for allegedly fishing and encroaching into neighbouring waters.
According to the reports, the fishermen were detained on April 20 by the Maritime and Fisheries Resources Monitoring Agency (PSDKP) in Tarakan, North Kalimantan (Kaltara), Indonesia.
At the time of their detention, they were reportedly about seven nautical miles from the Malaysia-Indonesia border in the Sulawesi Sea, near the eastern area of Sebatik Island, Nunukan.
Head of the PSDKP Tarakan Station, Yoki Jiliansyah, said the fishermen were from Wakuba, Batu 15, Jalan Apas, Tawau, and were aged 30 (the vessel’s skipper), 21, 45 and 53.
Also seized were 60kg of grouper and red snapper fish, along with a fishing vessel and fishing equipment.
