KALABAKAN: Sabah has maintained its record for the second highest number of Rukun Tetangga (KRT) registrations in the country, with the latest registration reaching 1,221 organizations.
Secretary-General of the Ministry of National Unity, Datuk Ruji Ubi, said there are 8,530 registered KRTs, with Selangor recording the largest number, followed by Sarawak in third place.
“We hope that all KRTs will act as agents of national unity and national security,” he said, speaking during the launch of the KRT for Kampung Sungai Haji Matahir here on Saturday.
Ruji noted that more than 80 percent of KRTs in Sabah are considered very active or active, although he acknowledged that there are some KRTs labeled as inactive.
His visits to various KRTs in Sabah, such as in Penampang, Tuaran, Tawau, and Kalabakan, have been vibrant, with various activities involving public participation.
“We also hope that all KRTs will involve people from different races and religions in implementing programs in line with the guidelines set by the ministry,” he added.
He mentioned that actions would be taken against KRTs that remain inactive, including cancellation of their registration status, stressing the importance of all organizations running their activities.
He further emphasized that the participation of communities with different backgrounds, including political affiliations, in KRT programs is key to achieving the national unity agenda.
“Currently, we are encouraging them to actively organize recreational programs involving various races and ages, including senior citizens and children,” he said.
Regarding the KRT of Kampung Sungai Haji Matahir, Ruji expressed hope that as the newest KRT, they will promote unity without causing division among the people.
The area has a large population, with 250 houses from two neighboring villages—Kampung Sungai Haji Matahir and Kampung Beruang.
“We also encourage the villagers to establish a Volunteer Patrol Scheme (SRS), which could be considered for the implementation of economic development programs such as the Progressive KRT,” he said.
“At the same time, we hope that more KRTs will be established in Kalabakan, especially in the Merotai area, as this platform is very beneficial for the well-being of the people,” he added.
In addition to KRTs, the national unity agenda is also promoted through SRS, Senior Citizens’ Day Care Centers (PAWE), Women’s Neighbors, Youth Neighbors, Unity Kindergartens, and Community Development Department (Kemas) Kindergartens.
