Kota Kinabalu: Members of the public were granted a rare behind-the-scenes look at maritime operations as the Royal Malaysian Navy open its doors for the Eastern Fleet Open Day at the Kota Kinabalu Naval Base, recently.

The two-day event held from May 3 – 4 saw thousands flock to the base to explore seven naval vessels, including the submarine KD Tunku Abdul Rahman and patrol ship KD Kelantan, with many visitors boarding warships for the first time.

“This is more than just an exhibition, it is our chance to show Malaysians how we protect our waters and inspire future generations to serve,” said Eastern Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Datuk Khir Junaidi Idris, who officiated the opening.

The Navy’s Special Forces (Paskal) staged a dramatic hostage rescue drill, while combat boats and an AW139 helicopter simulated maritime patrol operations

The 2026 D-MAX also introduces an 8-speed automatic gearbox with sequential shift across the range, including the Single Cab variant, making it the first pick-up truck in Malaysia to offer an automatic transmission in that body style.
Visitors were given the opportunity to try on diving gear with naval divers and operated radar systems under guidance from crew members.

Over 120 local food vendors and exhibitions from various security agencies created a festival atmosphere.

The open day also featured family-friendly activities including a high-performance car show and cooking competitions, with children particularly drawn to the colouring contest offering prizes of model warships.
