SIPITANG: The body of Pungut Madin, believed to have been attacked by a crocodile in Sungai Mengalong, was found in an incomplete state about 2.3km from the incident site during a joint search and rescue (SAR) operation.
Fire and Rescue Station Chief Calvin Joe Jeafery said part of the victim's leg was first discovered around noon on Monday by villagers, followed by the recovery of the body shortly after.
A drone was deployed to ensure the area was safe before rescuers retrieved the remains, which were then handed over to police.
The SAR operation ended at 2.30pm, but efforts continue to locate the rest of the victim’s remains.
Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob confirmed that a sanctioned crocodile hunting operation will be conducted by Sabah Wildlife Department and police. Any large crocodiles captured will be examined to recover possible body parts.
Dr Yusof also urged fishermen to exercise caution, noting that Sungai Mengalong is known for crocodile sightings.
