SANDAKAN: A 27-year-old Filipino who carried a 70cm-long machete (parang) in the public was jailed seven years.
Sessions Court Judge Zaini Fishir @ Fisal handed the sentence to Abdul Atar Jakal who pleaded guilty, Thursday.
Abdul carried the dangerous weapon at the ABX area, Bandar Indah, here, without any lawful purpose on April 28, this year, at 11am. He was charged under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
The court heard that on the said day, Sandakan police patrol received a report of a man suspected of going on a rampage while in possession of a machete around the area.
Abdul had also swung the machete at law enforcement officers on duty and fled towards the Bandar Kim Fung, then towards Sri Taman, Batu 3, here, before being apprehended.
The court ordered Abdul to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest and referred to the Immigration Department for further action.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Al-Hakim Abdul Razak appeared for the prosecution.
