KUALA PENYU: The Kaamatan Festival continues to be a vital platform to honour Sabah’s rich cultural heritage, strengthen unity among its multiracial communities, and boost tourism.
Deputy Chief Minister II, Datuk Seri Dr. Joachim Gunsalam, emphasized that Kaamatan fosters harmony among Sabah’s diverse ethnic and religious groups. He urged the public to embrace the festival as a means to preserve traditions while promoting the state’s unique culture globally.
“Kaamatan is more than a cultural revival; it also strengthens community bonds and supports tourism, bringing economic benefits to locals,” said Dr. Joachim, who also serves as Deputy President of the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA), during the Kuala Penyu and Menumbok sub-district celebrations on Saturday.
He stressed that celebrating Kaamatan at all levels is key to showcasing Sabah’s identity and unity, which are crucial to the state’s development. The government, he added, continues to support such cultural events as they foster national unity and pride.
Dr. Joachim also officiated a symbolic handover of educational aid from the Datuk Limus Jury Education Foundation to students pursuing higher education.
Meanwhile, Assistant Minister of Public Works and Kuala Penyu Assemblyman, Datuk Limus Jury, highlighted Kaamatan as an occasion for the Kadazan Dusun Murut (KDM) community to express gratitude for the harvest and share their culture.
He called on all ethnic groups to celebrate in unity under the theme “Kaamatan for All,” which aligns with the Sabah Maju Jaya roadmap and the national Malaysia Madani vision.
Also present were Beaufort Member of Parliament cum Chairperson of RISDA Semaian dan Lanskap Sdn Bhd Datuk Siti Aminah Aching; Assistant District Officer of Menumbok Hasnita Noorzain; Kuala Penyu District Council Executive Officer John Genchit; Sabah Tatana Cultural Association (STCA) President Tan Sri Wences Angang; Patron of the Kuala Penyu Tourism Operators Association (PPPKP) Datuk John Ghani; and Beaufort Deputy District Police Chief, DSP Mail Sundongi, along with local leaders.
