Kota Kinabalu: The water supply issue in Ranau is expected to be resolved through the implementation of a new water intake project at Nakamura River, costing RM62 million.
Finance Minister cum Karanaan Assemblyman, Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, said the project, which began two years ago, is scheduled for full completion by August this year.
“This project involves constructing a new water intake point at Nakamura River to replace the existing one at Liwagu River. The water will be treated at the Lohan Water Treatment Plant before being distributed throughout Ranau,” he said after launching the Masidi Manjun Fans (MMF) event here, Sunday.
Masidi said the 2015 earthquake in Ranau severely affected the Liwagu River intake point, filling it with sand and gravel.
The situation worsened during floods, causing extreme turbidity and forcing the shutdown of water supply from the existing treatment plant.
“The plant had to be closed, especially during floods, as it could not process water from Liwagu River due to excessive sand and gravel. Once completed, this new project will not only ensure uninterrupted supply but also increase Ranau’s water capacity,” he added.
Regarding the MMF, Masidi said it serves as a platform to disseminate information and gather public feedback on local issues and development proposals.
“The MMF is an information-sharing platform and a forum for discussions, including complaints or overlooked development matters,” he said.
