Chinese national fined for Tawau traffic offences
For the first charge, Gu was fined RM7,000 or spend five months in prison for driving without due care and attention, resulting in an accident and colliding with a mosque imam riding a motorcycle.
TAWAU: A Chinese national construction engineer working at the Tawau Hospital project site was fined a total of RM7,300 by the Magistrate’s Court here on Wednesday for committing two traffic offences.

Gu Meng, 27, was sentenced by Magistrate Dayang Aidaku Amira Aminuddin after pleading guilty to both offences, which occurred at the junction of Jalan Durahman and Jalan Tanjung Batu at around 7.30pm on March 25, this year.

For the first charge, Gu was fined RM7,000 or spend five months in prison for driving without due care and attention, resulting in an accident and colliding with a mosque imam riding a motorcycle.

For the second offence, he was fined RM300 or three days’ jail for driving a Toyota Hilux without insurance coverage.

According to the facts of the case, the accident happened while Gu was travelling to town from Tawau Hospital, while the victim, Norman Siis, 65, was heading to town from Tanjung Batu to refuel his motorcycle.

As a result of the incident, the victim suffered a broken right arm and a hip injury.

In asking for leniency, Gu, who chose to speak in Malay, requested not to be imprisoned, explaining that he came to Malaysia solely for work.

Meanwhile, Prosecuting Officer from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) ASP Joan Lee, requested the court to impose a sentence that would serve as a lesson to both the accused and the general public.

At the time of the incident, the accused did not possess any driving licence and was driving a vehicle owned by Shang Hai Construction Group Sdn Bhd. 

He had been issued a summons for that offence.
