LAHAD DATU: Marine Police Force (PPM) seized 387 cartons of smuggled cigarettes from a neighbouring country, valued at RM149,318.40 excluding tax, during a raid at a mangrove area in Kampung Puyut, on Thursday.

Commander of PPM Region 4 Sabah, ACP Nazri Ibrahim, said the operation at 5.20am found 238 cartons of Astro Black Menthol cigarettes and 149 cartons of A One Mild Menthol cigarettes hidden in the mangrove area.

“The raid was conducted based on PPM intelligence at the location. The cigarettes were hidden there to avoid detection by authorities. 

“So far, no individual has come forward to claim ownership of the items,” he said in a statement, Friday.

He added that the case will be investigated under the Customs Act 1967.

Nazri said the Marine Police Force will step up efforts to combat smuggling activities that threaten the country’s security and economy.
