Kundasang: The 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Ranau in 2015 was not only a tragedy that will be remembered, but it also led to multi-faceted reforms in the district.
Chairman of the Sabah Parks Board of Trustees (LPATTS), Peter Lintar, led a remembrance ceremony for those affected by the tragedy that claimed 18 lives a decade ago.
“Today, we gather here to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Mount Kinabalu earthquake tragedy. It is a day of reflection, remembrance and strength for all of us.
“The mighty Mount Kinabalu has been a witness to a tragedy that claimed 18 lives of loved ones,” he said.
“The scars remain deep in the hearts of family, friends, all Malaysians – especially the Sabahan community – and the international community who were also affected.”
He said this at a ceremony to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Mount Kinabalu Earthquake Tragedy held at Kiau Gap View, Timpohon Gate, Kinabalu Park on Thursday.
“We remember the souls of the fallen – climbers, mountain guides and young people full of enthusiasm. They left too soon, in a place that should have been a symbol of the beauty of God’s creation.
“To the bereaved families, we understand that this grief never truly goes away. Ten years may heal the physical wounds, but the longing for your loved ones stays.
Thank you for the strength and perseverance you have shown all this time,” he said.
Peter also did not forget to express his gratitude to the mountain guides, porters, rescue workers, volunteers and local residents.
“Your courage and sacrifice are a priceless source of inspiration. Your service will always be remembered and appreciated,” he said.
He added that the tragedy taught all parties the meaning of humility in the face of the power of nature.
It also raised the critical need for climbing safety and an efficient early warning system.
He said throughout the decade, various initiatives have been introduced and strengthened including the existence of MoSAR, rescue simulation training, more comprehensive rescue SOPs, increased training and assessment of mountain guides, improved emergency protocols, and continuous efforts to improve public awareness.
“To the families of the victims, you are never alone. The memories of your loved ones will remain alive in our prayers and deeds.
“For your information, we will not continue this type of ceremony here for years to come, but we will provide an opportunity for the victims’ family members to perform a pilgrimage or tafakur ceremony in this area,” he said.
He added that this year, in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the earthquake that occurred on June 5, 2015, an earthquake commemoration event was also held in Kundasang town with the participation of various parties including the surrounding community.
The programme was jointly organised by Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark, Ranau District Office and Mesilau Volunteer (MeVoc).
“I hope this programme will continue to ensure those involved will be prepared in facing any form of disaster including earthquakes,” he explained.
Also present were the Director of Sabah Parks, Dr Maklarin Bin Lakim, Archbishop of the Kota Kinabalu Archdiocese, His Grace Datuk John Wong Soo Kau, Ranau District Officer, Tinus Manggam, LPATTS members, Heads of Departments, victims’ family members, observers and the surrounding community.
