KOTA KINABALU: A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years in jail and two strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting his daughter last year.

Sessions Court Judge Marlina Ibrahim delivered the verdict after the man maintained his guilty plea during the facts and sentencing hearing.

The perpetrator received a seven-year jail term and two strokes for touching the 13-year-old victim's private parts on Dec 18, 2024, in Menumbok, Beaufort, with an additional two years imposed due to the familial relationship.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiqah Alya called for a deterrent sentence, highlighting the gravity and prevalence of such offences, despite the unrepresented man's plea for leniency.

The victim's ordeal came to light after she fled to her aunt's house, later revealing the abuse to her foster mother, who then reported the incident to the police.
