TAWAU: A man was injured after being flung into a drain when he was hit by a Toyota Hilux while jogging with 20 friends at 3.50am on Saturday along KM3, Jalan Apas.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the 34-year-old victim suffered head injuries and is currently receiving treatment in the male surgical ward at Tawau Hospital. His condition is reported to be stable.
The hit-and-run incident occurred as the victim and his friends were jogging from the McDonald’s area toward Bandar Sri Indah at KM10, Jalan Apas.
Police received information about the accident at 4.15am. The vehicle involved is believed to be a bronze mica Toyota Hilux, but its license plate remains unknown.
Initial investigations revealed that the victim, along with two others, was ahead of the group when the accident occurred.
“When they reached KM3 Jalan Apas, in front of Cheese Garden, the victim, who was jogging on the right side of the road, was struck from behind by the vehicle.
“The impact threw him into a concrete drain on the left side of the road, causing injuries,” Jasmin said in a media statement on Monday.
Police are actively tracking down the driver to assist in investigations under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.
Jasmin urged the public with information about the incident to contact ASP Joan Lee at 019-8537100.
A 23-second CCTV recording from a nearby building captured the moment of the incident. It shows three men jogging before one of them was suddenly hit and flung into the drain.
The driver is seen speeding away from the scene, while the victim’s friends rushed to his aid and alerted the others by clapping their hands overhead.
The video has since gone viral on social media.
