TAMBUNAN: The tagal system, which has long been practised in Kampung Monsok Tengah, continues to prove its effectiveness as a river ecosystem conservation strategy, with the Buka Tagal (opening of the tagal) activity held recently.
The activity is conducted once every two years, depending on weather conditions and the natural recovery status of the river. A total of 37 registered tagal members took part in the event, which was carried out in a spirit of unity and strong community cooperation.

The catch on the day exceeded 500 kilogrammes and was distributed fairly among all members as a reward for their commitment to preserving the tagal zone during the no-fishing period.
According to Harry Paulus @ Kaie, a local representative and member of the village’s tagal committee, the system is more than just a fishing ban – it is a form of sustainable resource management involving active community participation.
