Government aid for Putatan fire victims

PUTATAN: The State Government will rebuild homes that were completely destroyed in recent fires under the Rumah Mesra Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) housing programme, using the original sites.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said households with partially damaged homes will receive financial aid ranging from RM5,000 to RM10,000.

“The State Government is deeply concerned about the people’s well-being and is committed to safeguarding their welfare, especially in times of hardship,” he told reporters after visiting the temporary relief centre at Dewan Sri Putatan, Wednesday.

He said each affected head of household (KIR) will receive various forms of aid, including RM1,000 and food baskets through Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI), the Sabah Welfare Foundation (YKS) and the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS), as well as RM300 from the Sabah State Baitulmal Corporation.

On Monday, a fire in Kampung Petagas around 4pm affected 20 households and displaced 46 people. 

The following day, another fire in Bukit Vor affected eight households and left 28 people homeless.

Meanwhile, a total of 10 houses under the Rumah Mesra SMJ programme have been approved for victims of the fires.

Petagas Assemblyman Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Datuk Awang Sahari said the approval came following instructions from Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor to the State Secretary.

Nine of the homes will go to families who lost their houses, while one will be allocated to a fire victim at another location in Petagas.

“A total of 19 victims were involved. The offer letters will be issued to recipients in the near future,” he said. 

He said the State Government remains committed to helping disaster victims rebuild their lives as quickly as possible.
