MACC rewards Sabah civil servants over RM54,000 for rejecting bribes
KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) paid over RM54,000 in rewards to civil servants in Sabah last year for rejecting and reporting bribe offers.

Sabah MACC Director Datuk S Karunanithy (pic) said the reward scheme, in place since 2011, gives recipients the same amount as the bribe offered if they report it.

In 2023, RM52,850 was paid to the police and RM2,000 to the Immigration Department, with only one report from a State agency – the Wildlife Department.

He clarified the incentive applies only to civil servants directly offered bribes, not to public whistleblowers.

Karunanithy urged more proactive reporting from State departments, adding that MACC’s focus remains on prevention, education, and monitoring, including State-linked firms under SMJ.
