KOTA KINABALU: A 28km road from Kalabakan to the Malaysia-Indonesia border at Simanggaris, with a 20km spur to Kampung Serudong Laut, has been proposed as Sabah’s main road link to Kalimantan, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya.

Preliminary studies and design works under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RP3) are underway, including land surveys and soil investigations.

Another approved cross-border route from Pagalungan to Bantul in Pensiangan is in the procurement stage under the Federal Government’s Rural Road Programme.

Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob suggested an additional route linking Sipitang to Long Pasia and North Kalimantan via the Heart of Borneo, citing its economic potential and proximity to the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP).

Shahelmey acknowledged the strategic value of Yusof’s proposal and said it may be considered under future plans, including the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road (SSLR), which is currently active in Sarawak.
