KUNAK: Several key access routes along Jalan Selamat and Kampung Sungai Langgas were flooded following heavy downpour early Monday, causing disruptions to traffic and submerging an electrical substation.
Low-lying homes were also reported to be affected by rising water levels.
Motorists driving small vehicles were unable to pass through the affected areas, with only four-wheel drive (4WD) and high-clearance vehicles seen braving the floodwaters.
A local resident, Dayang, said she was forced to stop when she found the road completely impassable due to strong currents.
“I was on my way home but had to stop when I saw a long line of vehicles. Only big vehicles could go through,” she said. Dayang was driving a Perodua Kancil at the time.
An e-hailing driver heading to the village also had to turn back when he saw several cars stranded at the roadside.
Meanwhile, Kunak Fire and Rescue Chief, Mohamad Omarbatha, when contacted, confirmed a team had been dispatched to monitor the situation at Jalan Selamat and Kg Sungai Langgas.
“Our personnel are on the ground to assess the risk and provide assistance if needed,” he said.
