BEAUFORT: A 15-year-old girl who was being bullied at school attempted to end her life by jumping into the Padas River on Sunday.
Initial investigations revealed the girl had been bullied by her peers and was emotionally distressed.
She is believed to suffer from learning difficulties, which may have contributed to her action.
Beaufort District Police Chief Supt Wong Leong Meng said police received a call from Beaufort Hospital at about 4.25pm informing that a teenage girl nearly drowned.
“The incident occurred at around 4.15pm when a witness, who was fishing near the Padas River, saw her jump into the water,” he said.
Wong said the girl had also attempted to jump into the river behind a row of shops opposite a mosque.
“Several witnesses who were fishing nearby tried to stop her, but she reportedly said, ‘This is my business,’ before jumping,” he said.
The girl was rescued by witnesses who managed to pull her out before contacting the hospital.
A medical personnel at the scene provided initial treatment before she was taken to the Hospital, where she regained consciousness upon arrival.
The girl did not sustain any injuries and was later discharged into the care of her foster mother.
