LAHAD DATU: A 24-year-old woman was charged with abandoning a newborn in front of a house in Kampung Burung, Jalan Bakawali, on July 18.
The charge under Section 317 of the Penal Code for baby dumping was read to the accused before Magistrate Nur Asyraf Zolhani at the Magistrate Court, here, Wednesday.
The section carries a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment or a fine, or both.
No bail was offered to the accused and the Court set Sept 9, 2025 for the re mention of the case to wait for the Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) result.
The accused had allegedly dumped a baby boy in front of a house in Kampung Burung, Jalan Bakawali at about 3am on July 18.
The baby was found alive by member of public who immediately alerted the police. The baby was taken to the Lahad Datu Hospital for further treatment.
However, the baby was pronounced dead at 7.02pm the same day as he was born prematurely and had too low body weight.
The woman was arrested on July 20 at Lahad Datu Police Headquarters.
