Grouses over poor internet connectivity in Kuala Penyu
“Some have even reported that their Unifi line has not been working for the past three months, and they have decided to leave it as it is for now, intending to wait out the contract and eventually terminate the service,” said Henry. - FMT pic for illustration only.
KUALA PENYU: Broadband users around Kampung Kabunau and the town area are affected by unstable internet connectivity, which has caused significant inconvenience, particularly for those conducting online businesses.

A content creator, Henry Ongging, said entrepreneurs and online sellers have been unable to use their Unifi service since July 9, this year.

The 100th call failed to get through to TM’s technical team for a report to be made and for a contractor to be dispatched for repairs. Eventually, the report had to be submitted directly to the TM office in Beaufort.

“However, as of July 22, no repairs or follow-up actions have been taken. The Unifi system has been experiencing issues for nearly two weeks,” he said.

Henry OnggingFor entrepreneurs who rely on Unifi  broadband, particularly for tasks such as graphic design, video editing, and uploading large megabyte-sized files, these tasks are difficult to carry out using only a mobile phone.

Henry said he even had to spend extra money to purchase additional mobile data credit, as mobile phones have a monthly data usage limit.

A disruption lasting 2–3 days may be acceptable, but repeated outages lasting a week or more each month are extremely disappointing and reflect very poor service.

“Some have even reported that their Unifi line has not been working for the past three months, and they have decided to leave it as it is for now, intending to wait out the contract and eventually terminate the service,” said Henry.

Online entrepreneurs also risk being labelled as scammers if they fail to respond to transactions within 48 hours.

“Therefore, this Unifi disruption poses a serious threat to online businesses in the area.

“As the sole broadband provider in Malaysia, TM must take responsibility and improve its services,” he said.
