TAWAU: Four suspects involved in connection with a riot that broke out at a restaurant in the Fajar town centre here at 12.40am, Monday, have been arrested.
District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspects, aged between 17 and 29, were detained following a report lodged by a 30-year-old male victim on the same day.
“The victim claimed he was attacked by about 10 men while having drinks at the restaurant, without knowing the reason for the assault,” Jasmin said on Friday.
During police questioning, the victim admitted to knowing some of his attackers but said others involved were unfamiliar to him.
He reported being punched in the face, hit with a glass, and said one of the assailants was armed with a knife.
Police acted swiftly, arresting the first suspect – a 27-year-old delivery rider – in Kampung Pukat, Tanjung Batu Laut.
The second suspect, a 29-year-old trader, was nabbed at the Takada Commercial Centre, Batu 1 Jalan Apas.
The third and fourth suspects, aged 17 and 26, were detained later at the District Criminal Investigation Division (BSJD).
Jasmin confirmed that all four suspects were arrested on the same day the victim lodged the report.
The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons, which carries a penalty of imprisonment and caning upon conviction.
