TAWAU: Eighteen villages in Merotai benefited from the installation of 300 solar lights to enhance safety and the well-being of residents in the area.

Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat) President, Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah, said the installation indirectly helps ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians in areas lacking streetlight facilities.

He said the implementation was carried out in stages since two years ago.

“Before this, the roads and alleys going into the villages were really dark at night, which could be dangerous for the people living there.

“Therefore, we took the initiative to install solar lights to brighten up the area and make it easier for villagers to carry out their activities at night,” he said.

Liew said solar lights were cost-effective, do not require connection to the electricity supply, and can operate even during power outages.

“We will identify additional locations within the constituency that require solar lights and will consider subsequent installation phases based on needs and feedback from residents,” said Liew.

The villages receiving the installation of these lights include Kuala Merotai; Kampung Iban Baharu and Lama; Sungai Udin; Kampung Langsat; Kampung Jagung; Kampung Kijang; Kampung Pengkalan Asli; Kampung Tanah Merah; Kampung Simpang Tiga; Kampung Mangaris; and Kampung Kelapa.

“This is an ongoing effort and a social responsibility towards the villagers in Merotai.”

Liew expressed his gratitude to all parties involved, including members of Parti Harapan Rakyat, who carried out the installation through a spirit of cooperation.
