Kota Kinabalu: A 21-year-old man who claimed he wanted to help someone who treated him to breaking of fast was charged with dealing with unlawful transactions involving a sum of RM22,800 using his own bank account.
Mazlan Wong Han Bang pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan to the charge against him, on Tuesday.
Mazlan is accused of unlawfully involving directly in a transaction involving the money using his bank account at a financial institution on March 15 this year at the Ace Delight Food Court in Kg Nagapas, Papar.
The offence under Section 424C(1) of the Penal Code carries a jail term of between three and ten years, or could be a fine of between RM10,000 and RM150,000, or both, on conviction.
The court set Sept 2 this year for pre-trial case management and released Mazlan on bail of RM5,000 in two local sureties.
Mazlan was also ordered to report to Sabindo police station in Papar every month, to surrender his passport, if any, to the court until the disposal of his case.
The court advised Mazlan to engage a counsel to represent him.
During the proceedings, the court had asked him about the money and Mazlan said he just wanted to help a ‘person’.
“I withdrew the money from my account and later gave it to the person who treated me for breaking of fast,” said Mazlan when the court asked him what the person had given him in return.
In asking for his bail sum to be reduced, Mazlan told the court that he was working with his mother to sell vegetables in Kinarut market.
Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Bryan Francis offered bail of RM10,000 in two local sureties with several additional conditions to be imposed.
Mazlan was not represented.
