BEAUFORT: An old Health Department quarters was destroyed in a fire at 5.50pm on Friday, said Fire and Rescue Station Chief Ishak Jabas.

Upon receiving the fire alert, which originated just 0.4km away, several fire engines and personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene, arriving at 5.52pm, only two minutes after the alert.

The Fire and Rescue Department deployed seven personnel using an FRT vehicle, along with two others on a separate unit, to the scene under his direct command.

“The fire involved an unused Health Department quarters (an old building) measuring 60 by 50 feet, which was 90 per cent destroyed,” he said.

The firefighting operation involved one 200-foot hose line with a single jet, employing both offensive and defensive techniques to extinguish the fire. No casualties were reported. The cause and estimated damage are currently under investigation.

Prior to that, the department also responded to three other cases, including two cat rescue operations and one hornet extermination case.
