Kota Kinabalu: A 40-year-old man was fined RM10,000 in default 12 months in prison for overstaying in the State for five years.

Anas Sudirman pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain on Wednesday. 

He was arrested in Sook, Keningau on June 24 this year, and his temporary work pass was found to have expired on June 4, 2020. 

The offence under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 carries a jail term of up to five years, or a minimum fine of RM10,000, or both, on conviction. 

In mitigation, Anas requested a lenient sentence and to be deported as soon as possible.

Prosecuting Officer Chin Tze Mee from the Immigration Department appeared for the prosecution.
