KOTA KINABALU: Stern actions should be taken against police officers if proven they failed to follow procedures in the investigation of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir’s death, said the legal team representing her mother, Noraidah Lamat.

In a joint statement, the lawyers — Hamid Ismail, Shahlan Jufri, Rizwandean M Borhan, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, Mohd Syarulnizam Mohd Salleh and Farrah Nasser — welcomed the disciplinary probe by Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS).

They said the #JusticeForZara movement, which has gained nationwide support, reflected public concern that proper legal procedures were not observed after Zara’s death on 17 July.

The legal team urged the Royal Malaysia Police to treat the case as a reminder to ensure all investigations into suspicious deaths are handled with full transparency and in strict compliance with standard operating procedures.

At the same time, they noted that the family is still awaiting a date from the Attorney General’s Chambers on the inquest application for Zara’s case.
