Kota Kinabalu: The International Conference on Indigenous Digital Education (ICRIDEC) 2025, hosted by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), has been hailed as a crucial platform for exploring how digital technology can empower rural and indigenous communities amid the ongoing digital transformation.
UMS Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor said the three-day conference, held in collaboration with the Aminuddin Baki Institute (IAB), aims to address challenges and innovative solutions to ensure the digital revolution becomes an engine for economic empowerment in these communities.
He highlighted the importance of “digital sovereignty,” referring to the right of indigenous peoples to own, control and protect their digital data.
“New technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) can also be used to preserve cultural heritage, including developing AI tutors to teach endangered languages and documenting oral histories,” he said.
