Tenom: The mystery surrounding recent drone flights that sparked concern among residents of Mukim Entabuan and Mukim Mandalom has finally been cleared.
Insight Resources Sdn Bhd, a contractor appointed by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (Sabah Electricity), confirmed that the drones were part of engineering work to collect precise GPS coordinates for a project replacing old AAC (All Aluminium Conductor) power lines with ABC (Aerial Bundled Cable) lines in the area.
Company representative Mohd Afis said the drone survey helps technical teams identify electrical routes more efficiently without needing extensive ground work in hilly or difficult-to-access areas.
“The flights were limited to the project area, from SK Mandalom to SK Entabuan, and were carried out in a controlled manner by certified technicians. “They did not involve other residential areas,” he said in a WhatsApp statement.
The explanation came after villagers expressed worry over unidentified drones seen hovering above their homes, raising safety and privacy concerns.
Insight Resources has since apologised for the confusion and unease caused, thanking the community for their cooperation and understanding.
“We understand the residents’ concerns and will ensure all work is done responsibly and in compliance with safety regulations. We appreciate the support and feedback from the local community,” the statement said.
The power line upgrade project is expected to improve electricity supply reliability, particularly in Mandalom and Entabuan, and reduce outage risks caused by weather or aging infrastructure.
